Greetings to you in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I am writing to you at this time when the country is in the midst of a crisis, the scale of which has not been seen for many decades. These are uncertain and difficult times for us all as the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to affect our loved ones and communities.

The Church of our Lord has stood as a beacon of hope and light for over 2000 years and we need now more than ever to stand in unity as an example to our communities and our nation. We must not focus on fear and the uncertainty of the challenges we face. Our confidence is remaining in the secret place of the Most High, and keeping in fervent prayer for God’s people, especially those that are suffering and those selflessly serving in the NHS, Emergency services and those that care for the vulnerable and those in need.

It is therefore critical that we are socially responsible and that we follow the current directives and policies of the Government regarding church services and gatherings, which as you are aware, have been suspended until further notice. The evidence is clear that these restrictions (for full details please go to the government website) must be in place to reduce the risk of the transmission of the virus and therefore help save lives. I would implore you to adhere to these directives and not put yourselves and others at risk. This is an action that our faith demands, demonstrating strength and compassion as we play our part in helping to tackle this pandemic.

Our church communities need spiritual and practical input, so we must look for new ways and use the technology and online resources available to keep in touch, encourage and care. Our Lord told us of the challenges that our world and His church would face and although for now we are separated from meeting together in person, we continue to pray and worship our God in Spirit and Truth. May He continue to lead, strengthen and bless our congregations and our communities as we steadfastly serve Him at these uncharted times.

As always, my team and I are available to you if you have need of anything.

I remain in unending love and special esteem.

+Archbishop Dr Costakis C. Evangelou MBE
